Written by a father-son team of prominent geologists, Donald and David Hyndman, NATURAL HAZARDS AND DISASTERS, Third Edition, emphasizes Earth, the atmosphere, and the hazardous natural processes and events that dramatically alter them. In teaching introductory environmental and physical geology courses, the authors found that topics involving natural hazards are among the most interesting for students like you. They also realized that employing natural hazards as a thematic focus and context motivates their students to learn basic scientific concepts. You begin each chapter by reading about the underlying geological processes as well as the key terms that describe them. Next, you explore the impact these processes have on humans (as well as the impact that humans have on the processes). Finally, the authors analyze strategies for mitigating these hazards' physical and financial harm, and present prospects for the future. With over 900 images and illustrations, this third edition will

I like everything about the Kindle version of this except for two things, the first being perhaps a deal-breaker:1. If there's any detail or small text in any of the figures in the book, you can't make them out because they are low resolution. This wasn't such an impediment to my grade in this case, because my teacher had his own PowerPoint presentations for all the test-relevant material. But that doesn't help with studying outside of class.
2. There are no pages in the Kindle version. You have location numbers, but they are not any indication of page. There might be any number of locations for every 1 page, depending on the page and the settings you set the text size and column width to, and pages do not even turn out the same within a single viewing. You might read through 5 pages and decide to go back and reference a (blurry) image and its accompanying description, only to find that now the description is separated from the image by a page break now where it wasn't before, which can sometimes be very inconvenient. Therefore you cannot easily reference page numbers for your class or your own convenience. Bookmarks do help some. Fortunately, again, this wasn't as much of a problem in my class because we were assigned chapters and page numbers were not referenced. Chapters and chapter sections, however, are easily accessible via the table of contents, taking you to whatever chapter or section you click on.
Overall it seems to be working out for me in this case (still taking the course), but the unlegible text in the figures is a big problem. I'd definitely take the physical copy over the Kindle version as it stands now. Hopefully these problems can be addressed, though.

Natural Hazards and Disasters Donald Hyndman David Hyndman 9780538737524 Books Reviews
I bought it used, it showed light wear, but I could still read it fine so worth saving 100 bucks.
Great value. Thank you
great textbook to study or to find information
book was very informational. I needed this book for a earthquake class. lots of useful information as with any other book.
I'm sure the book was lovely. I didn't use it at all for my class though. Don't you love it when professors make you buy a textbook that you, in reality, don't actually need? I sure do!
Principle resource for training responders
I have ordered more books than necessary online and it's a tough call. You are totally at the seller's mercy as to condition and this book was no exception. There must be 25 grades of 'good' and boy did I expect this to be in better condition than it was at any price. Certainly a better bargain than new, I still think 'good' means the book ought to be free of last semester's food on the cover. I returned it and this represents my 3rd and final attempt at writing a review as the smiling A god keeps refusing to post my comments. Sorry to mislead with the 5 star review but an important effort to miss-direct the Orwellian presence..
