I heard of Arthur Machen after reading a book of spooky stories. I didn't care for the first one but the others are pretty good. I had already read The Great God Pan. My problem, and I don't know if it was the author or this edition formatting, is that there are few paragraph breaks. There were pages and pages with just blocks of text. I was assuming that such a large block of text was just leading up to the main story, where there would be more action, but then the story ended.Product details

Classic and intelligent literary fantasy/horror, a must for the library (and mind) of any enthusiast in these genres.
A very interesting collection. The writing style is very much in the same vein with H.P. Lovecraft. If you like Lovecraft, you really need to give Arthur Machen a try.
This was described to me as in the same vein as Lovecraft, but I couldn't see it.
Machen is an unbelievably skillful writer. He plays with logic and fantasy and longing and forbidden fruit. It is interesting, often disturbing, and thought-provoking.
Classic weird horror. As a fan of the genre I was surprised to realize I'd never read Machen before even though he influenced some of my favorite authors (Lovecraft, Poe, etc). This collection doesn't disappoint. Skin-crawling stuff from cover to cover.
Machen, a major influence on later weird fiction writers such as Lovecraft and Ashton-Smith, creates eerie, atmospheric stories that imply rather than show. This literary conceit works well for the type of existential horror Machen posits lives behind, beside and next to us. Almost always out of direct sight, the creature and powers are subtle, old and dangerous but passive until disturbed by the hubris of man. In some ways, his characters celebrate and warn against progress and research for fear of what such inquiries might yield. All in all, an essential read for word fiction enthusiasts.
If you admire the writing of Lovecraft you would do well to explore one of the writers who had the greatest influence on his writing. This novel burns slowly and steadily. And flickers and smoulders until suddenly you are trapped inside an inferno that offers no escape. Read with a cautious and careful mind and you will be rewarded, its splendor is hidden inside its subtlety, and its horror is present in what it leaves to the reader's imagination.
